This Just In: Fuck Sports!
It’s that time of the year when all my high school facebook friends (it’s not creepy, it’s for work) are posting pictures of them graduating or getting ready to graduate. Congratulations!
Now, Sports, I’m not too keen on seeing facebook pictures of you throwing parties (with cake!) in the school library to celebrate whatever student athletes you’ve scouted and put under contract. We’ve heard enough about how big schools exploit their athletes, and we’ve heard enough about football-related concussions leading to violence, paranoia, or whatever scarred brains do. We’re also fucking sick of student athletes getting away with sexual assault (or worse!) in the name of “Yay Sports!”
So, I won’t be celebrating the students you’re bringing into your fold of darkness and rape culture. I will pity them.
I’ll be cheering on scientists and artists, theologians and ethical business majors, foreign language students and language arts students, and kids who eschew college in favor of a trade school or other work. At least when they fuck up they’ll have to deal with it rather than the school hiring lawyers to bury the problem under the rug so the football season goes uninterrupted.
Go get your learn on! Fuck sports!

note: I’m a gay dude who’s experienced much homophobia from the athletes in school, so my disinterest in sports is more than, “boring!,” it’s more along the lines of “encouraging and/or excusing sociopathic behavior on the basis that athletes are a different and/or better class of people than non-athletes.”
updated to add: My roommate in college played used to be…a jock, I suppose, and he is beyond awesome, not even close to homophobic, not even close to sociopathic, so I’m not saying everyone who plays sports is an evil athlete, but the culture of college sports that lets the school host a party (with cake!) in the library and excuses sexual assault is a culture that needs to be sent off on an ice flow.

Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-TN) agitated against food aid for poor Americans included in the Farm Bill during last week’s House Agricultural Committee debate, accusing the government of stealing “other people’s money.” Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has already been decimated in both the House and Senate versions of the Farm Bill, cutting off nearly 2 million working families, children, and seniors from food assistance.
Fincher invoked the Bible in his defense of the devastating cuts, quoting, “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
Stephen Fincher needs to get his ass kicked by Jesus, who would say “don’t quote the Bible to defend forcing people to starve, you fucking asshole!”
